Backed by a loosey-goosey A-list of New Orleans musicians (Dr. John's band), these 1973 recordings were the first the pianist ever made, besides the '60s singles that yielded "Gonzo." As the title suggests, the master tapes were lost, and these demos weren't put out as an album until 1992. Positively exploding with exuberance from the first rumbling seconds of "Goodnight Irene," Booker's performances here are among his best, and it's at the very least revelatory to hear him play with any band, let alone one as superb as this. It becomes difficult to imagine this dude ever feeling bad.
