With "Johnny Cash Junkie (Buck Owens Freak)," Brooks and Dunn proclaim, "I'll take a little less pop / and a lot more twang." Cowboy Town delivers just that. The rootsy title track sets the tone for the follow-up to 2005's Hillbilly Deluxe with a warm, grinding Hammond organ and lyrics about a redneck town, and "The Ballad Of Jerry Jeff Walker" is a red-eyed honky-tonker that features the song's namesake singing in his weathered drawl.
