Camp Lo's debut and one of the last great dispatches from hip-hop's jazzy '90s, Coolie High traffics in post-Tribe jazz samples and lyrics that are smart without being self-consciously intelligent (think Jay Dee-era Slum Village). Sonny and Geechie Suede have a quick-fire delivery that contrasts nicely with the music's spacious productions, and their '70s-stylized tales make this perfect music for a sunny daze. Singles "Coolie High" and "Luchini" are obvious standouts, but bubbling "Sparkle" and "B-Side to Hollywood" (featuring Trugoy from De La Soul) are also nice.
