It shouldn't be surprising that 9th Wonder, the former Little Brother producer whose modus operandi involves a romantic infatuation and subsequent regurgitation of '90s traditionalist boom bap, would take the helm for one of the last great NYC emcees still operating in 2008. The results aren't exactly revelatory, but Formula is solid. 9th's crackling, ephemeral soul anchors stand-out tracks "Brand (New Day)" and "Hold it Down," while Buckshot's emotionally raw and street savvy brand of hip-hop lyricism is as compelling as it is depressingly outdated.
