Sketches From an American Journey is David Arkenstone's attempt to capture the sprawling beauty our country's landscape, though the new age veteran apparently restricted his travels to the west of the Mississippi. The album's sweeping strings, mellow grooves and cascading piano melodies don't exactly evoke, say, inner Detroit or suburban New Jersey. Then again, Sketches would make a great soundtrack for the panoramas of the Blue Ridge Parkway, even if it lacks banjo and a country fiddle.
