Joakim, like James Murphy, has long had a love-hate relationship with dance music and the currency of cool. "You used to be young," he sings on his fourth album; "Where do you belong?" After 2009's more extroverted Milky Ways, this withdraws into a curl -- cagey but cozy, warmed by vintage synths whose LEDs flash like warning lights. Acid house gives way to acid rock; feel-good chords are couched in dissonance and difficult sonics. It's exhilarating. Finding his voice as never before, Joakim is not going gentle into that good night, after the clubs close and the 30-somethings go home.
