The Best of R.E.M. dropped shortly after the band's major-label breakthrough, 1991's Out of Time. As a companion to the rarities-oriented collection Eponymous, it's a decent introduction to the group's I.R.S. years. Older fans -- those whose hero worship reaches back to the mid 1980s -- will tell you this stuff is the band's best. They're probably right. What's been partially lost to time is the fact that nobody sounded like R.E.M. at the time. Fusing vintage American folk-rock to the scrappy, DIY ethos of post-punk, they're one of the chief architects of both alternative rock and indie pop.
