Wake Up the Nation is a tough, very urban-sounding record (there is little room for the songs to hang -- every space is packed). Weller and Noonday Underground's Simon Dine created this quickly in London, with the singer-songwriter throwing away his pen and improvising most of the lyrics. The stirring results are even more psychedelic and punky than the Jam's Sound Affects (Bruce Foxton even shows up on two tunes). Members of My Bloody Valentine and the Move also contribute. How many rockers -- including Weller's heroes -- sound this vital and creative at 51?
