The queen of theatrical excess goes in the complete opposite direction on his latest. But leave it to Rufus to do even pared-down to the hilt. All Days is just Rufus and his piano -- a fact that's easy to forget on dramatic, densely layered tracks like "Give Me What I Want" or his glistening renderings of Shakespearean sonnets. But even when he finally does minimalist on the slow, hushed "Zebulon," it's larger than life. The entire album seems to ache with an exquisite pain, an emotion Rufus expresses gorgeously (and knows intimately after his mother's recent death).
