When you've named yourself after My Fair Lady, you're bound to be (a) a bit coy and (b) rather theatrically childlike. Kiddish whimsy abounds on Ms. Doolittle's debut, tearing around the beginning of the album in "Rollerblades" and even gasping out with a little lullaby at the end. In the middle, Eliza gives adulthood a shot -- or at least the youthful version of earlier eras: acoustic jazz, retro soul, candy-coated malt-shop pop, which all sound a lot like Lily Allen (minus the edge). We do believe she's got it when she eases up on the quirk and just sings, as on "So High."
