Poèmes - Ravel, Messiaen, Dutilleux

After releasing a strangely captivating "rock" record in 2010, Fleming returns to her home territory
of French song with a program that spans the 20th century, with works by Maurice Ravel and Olivier
Messiaen and closing with Henri Dutilleux's Le temps l'horloge. Ravel's erotic 1903 Shéhérazade
is a bold entrance for Fleming, but it's the Dutilleux (here in its first recording) where she sounds most at home. It's fairly easy to believe the piece was written for her; with its climactic drama and particularly French flavor (there's even an accordion), it draws on her seductive strengths.
