Modern acts owe even more to Suicide's Alan Vega than they do to the British, German and American bands that followed in his bleak, industrial wake (everyone from the Fall and Cabaret Voltaire to Soft Cell and Nine Inch Nails). Vega's still dropping throbbing beats and making sense of sonic storms and pretty, crooned interludes. The man's beloved N.Y.C. may be cleaned up now, but America's modern political landscape brings out more bile in the ever angry art-punk than yester-year's urban squalor ever did.
