Cassandra Wilson has played with Steve Coleman and Wynton Marsalis, which gives you a sense of her range in jazz circles. But she’s just as eclectic outside the idiom -- as her Robert Johnson covers proved on Blue Light ‘Til Dawn. This album nods toward folk forms, too, even if all but one of the songs (“O Sole Mio”) is an original. The blues here isn’t Delta-derived; instead, it’s lighter stuff, the sort of tasteful yet relaxed fare you’d expect in one of Woody Allen’s European films. Fortunately, Wilson’s formidable voice saves the session from trending toward mere background music.
