The Dirty Projectors can sometimes sound like sugar-fueled kids being let loose in a music store. But Swing Lo Magellan seems more subdued, more focused on subtly ambitious songwriting than in-your-face weirdness. Throughout, sweet female ooh's and ahh's stretch like taffy around frontman Dave Longstreth's cool croons and funky, minimalist beats. The album effortlessly passes with echoes of Scott Walker, John Lennon, The Velvet Underground and even Grizzly Bear, but there's also random glam guitar, symphonic strings and bloopy synths to add just the right amount of dissonance to the splendor.
