For their first album for 4AD, Denmark's Efterklang edges away from their long-form arrangements to deliver their most direct statement to date. Where 2007's Parades featured 30 musicians, Magic Chairs finds the band slimming back down to its core quartet and digging into concise, electro-acoustic songs with a newfound lyrical, melodic emphasis. Radiohead edges out Talk Talk's influence on songs like "Alike," while "Full Moon" recalls the delicate chamber pop of Elvis Costello's The Juliet Letters. Sunday-morning listening par excellence, whatever the season.
