Let the Ives-inspired thorns of Carter - endless tumults of timbre, complex polyrhythms, spasms of motifs - only just brush against your skin with this early work, the Minotaur. Written in 1947 for a collaboration with Balanchine, this ballet hints at the great composer's future heights while giving the ears of lesser mortals (read: most everyone) a chance to catch a breath.
