Although this 1969 LP is credited to Matthews Southern Comfort, it's really just Matthews accompanied by a gaggle of folk-rockers, including former Fairport Convention pals Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol and Ashley Hutchings. As a result, it's an astounding slab of glam-country-folk -- spacey like the Byrds, cosmic like early Bowie. But that doesn't stop Matthews, who possesses a soaring tenor, from digging deep into the earth for such pastoral beauties as "A Commercial Proposition."
