The true piano wizard of New Orleans, James Booker's unpredictable mastery of the instrument incorporated boogie woogie, stroll, calypso, gospel, ragtime, Tuts Washington, Professor Longhair and Chopin. He was liable to toss in any of the styles he had absorbed as a result of a lifelong musical voraciousness at any time and at high speeds, with precision. These recordings were made in 1976 and intended for his second record; Booker, a man doomed by his many vices (listen to the lyrics to "Junko Partner"), is at the very top of his game here, his voice strong and his playing fantastic.
