Pennario excels with the difficult, populist, often showy works of American composer and virtuoso Louis Moreau Gottschalk. This compilation of Gottschalk's work, recorded in 1992, finds standouts in pieces like Danza (an excellent homage to the Caribbean danza form) and Polka in B Flat, which both have a light touch and good-humored interpretation. Pennario's performance of the patriotic concert pieces, like Battle Cry of Freedom, are also well played, with appropriately flashy bombast.
