Stax Profiles von Little Milton

Though Little Milton was always known as something of a journeyman, throughout the 1960s and early '70s he was pivotal in kick-starting the soul-blues movement. After recording a handful of excellent sides for the legendary Chess Records, he jumped to Stax, where his love of soul really came to the fore. Opener "Let Me Down Easy" is textbook Southern soul: sweaty testifying, choked-up cries, heaving waves of heartache. The groovy "If That Ain't a Reason (For Your Woman to Leave You)" is yet further evidence of Milton's versatility, what with its savvy touches of funk and Staples-like gospel.
