Western Lodge was MoR's first studio album since 1993's Sunrise on the Sufferbus. Once a fully functioning band, the Masters were now a vehicle for cofounder Chris Goss, who at the time was also busy producing his pals Queens of the Stone Age. This might explains the record's off-the-cuff feel. It's less a statement than some pals having fun in the studio, paying tribute to the effects-soaked art pop of Queen and Electric Light Orchestra. Plus, there's some titanic riffage going down.
