Kurt Cobain's 1994 suicide note infamously quoted Neil Young; it's hard not to view Sleeps With Angels, released four months later, through that awful prism. The mood is elegiac and unbearably delicate, heavy on gentle balladry and Tonight's the Night-style mournfulness, though the roughneck snarl (and startling falsetto harmonies) of Crazy Horse won't be denied. "Western Hero" and "Train of Love" (same tune, different lyrics) are gorgeous; "Piece of Crap" is hilarious, especially if you're 16. The "Too late! Too soon!" chant on the shell-shocked, softly enraged title track will hit you hard.
