Fans of the Werner Herzog film Aguirre, the Wrath of God will recognize the first track on this combination of two Popol Vuh albums recorded in 1971 and '72, respectively; it is the piece "Aguirre" that plays at the beginning and at the end of the movie. The German progressives clearly had a major effect on the post-rock movement of the mid-'90s/early '00s (think Godspeed You! Black Emperor), and In the Gardens of Pharao/Aguirre is a good place for newcomers to start. The second track, "In the Gardens of Pharao," is a creepier "Future Days" and predates the Can song by two years.
