The Railway Children were the right band at the wrong time. Still, the teenage Gary Newby was a talented songwriter and group leader. Their very English, 1980s indie version of sincere '60s folk rock found them earning comparison to the likes of The Smiths, Lloyd Cole and Aztec Camera. Early Factory Records wonders such as "A Gentle Sound" have survived the decades with rare grace, while later cuts, like "Somewhere South" and "In the Meantime," deserved the kind of success that "Every Beat of the Heart" had in 1990 when it reached No. 1 on the American modern rock charts.
