As with Bad Religion, there's no escaping Social D's influence on American punk. After spending the '80s playing footsies with the hardcore scene, they decided to fully embrace their love of roots rock and populist pop. The result was a self-titled gem that confused The Clash with Bruce Springsteen with The Replacements with X. "Ball and Chain" and "The Story of My Life" are so damn catchy that they actually make boozing, failure, and relationship dysfunction sound romantic and enticing. It's a formula every band from Green Day to Against Me! to The Gaslight Anthem would attempt to replicate.
