Calling Jakes "Barry White on gospel R&B" is cliché but unavoidable, especially on the so-low-it's-scary narration of the intro. Visiting voices (including Smokie Norful and Donnie McClurkin) lift the LP to melodic and inspirational heights. Take caution with the immensely heavy but poignantly redemptive "Chapter 7."
